Tis the start of the bug season. Some of the first bugs to make an appearance in early spring are the swarming insects. Carpenter and fire ants and of course, termites are usually the first to show up. None should be taken for granted. As always it is better to be proactive than reactive. Keep the gutters clean and replace any rotted wood on the house. This includes decaying wood from trees, shrubs, and yes, you should check the mulch.
All of these types of pests can be controlled, but you have to know which one you are dealing with. Ants are best controlled with baits. At McGregor, a popular ant bait choice is Amdro Fire Ant Bait. Once you distribute a circle of bait around the mound, it’s only a matter of time before the worker fire ants share it with the queen. After the queen eats it and dies, her colony dies with her.
Another choice for fire ants is Martin’s Surrender, which is a powerful fire ant insecticide. For mound treatment with Surrender Fire Ant Killer apply by evenly distributing 1 to 2 teaspoons evenly over the top of the mound. And lastly, a popular choice available at McGregor is Over ‘n Out Fire Ant Killer. This product has been proven to kill mounds for up to 6 months.
